The UYMA Drumline was founded in 2024 by Curtis Kendrick, a passionate musician who began his journey in drum corps at the age of 13. For 45 years, Mr. Kendrick went on to become a National Recording artist, building a legacy through his love for music. Now, with a heart full of gratitude for the opportunities he was given, he is determined to pass that same gift forward to the youth of Rochester, NY. His mission is to open doors to the world of music for young people, especially those from underserved communities and diverse backgrounds. The UYMA Team aims to inspire, empower, and create lasting opportunities that help these youth reach their fullest potential.
OUR HISTORY
Curtis Kendrick is the remaining active member of the legendary Mighty Liberators, that continues to carry the torch of a proud tradition that shaped the heart of Rochester, NY. With unwavering dedication, Curtis is working to reignite the Drumline tradition that once captivated our community and inspired generations of young musicians.
The Mighty Liberators Drum and Bugle Corps was a true trailblazer—one of the only all-black drum and bugle corps of its time. Bursting onto the scene in the late 1970s, they quickly became a force to be reckoned with in the "Class A" division, just one step below the prestigious "Open Class." Their energy, precision, and passion set them apart as one of the most exciting and influential corps of that era.
Now, as UYMA embarks on the exciting journey to revive the Drumline tradition in Rochester in 2025, we invite all Alumni of the Mighty Liberators to join us in this revival. We want to honor the rich history of this remarkable institution by bringing together the voices, experiences, and wisdom of those who lived it. Share your stories, your knowledge, and your love for the corps with our youth—so they too can feel the power and pride of being part of something truly special.
Your legacy lives on, and with your help, we can pass it on to the next generation. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
