Detroit Urban Ballroom Dancing in Rochester was started by Michael Avent Sr., the lead instructor for United Youth Music and Arts (UYMA) dance classes. A passionate and accomplished dance educator, Michael was inspired by his legendary relative, Charles "Cholly" Atkins, a name synonymous with grace, rhythm, and innovation in American dance.

Cholly Atkins pioneered what he called "vocal choreography," a groundbreaking blend of movement and music that enhanced the performances of some of the greatest names in soul and Motown history. From choreographing early routines for The Miracles to being hired by Berry Gordy in 1964 to craft the signature moves of The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and many more, Atkins helped shape a cultural legacy that still inspires today. His influence extended beyond Motown, choreographing for artists like The Cadillacs, The O'Jays, and The Sylvers. His timeless steps transformed not just music, but how performers moved on stage,  with elegance, unity, and soul.

Today, UYMA proudly carries on this tradition. Through Detroit Urban Ballroom Dancing, we are preserving a rich cultural art form and passing it down to the next generation. As other traditional art forms fade, ballroom dancing reminds us of the power of rhythm to connect families, build community, and promote health and joy. It’s more than just dance,  it’s a living history, a shared experience, and a celebration of culture and connection.
